M27 closure: Diversion signs 'tampered' with says council concerned about severe congestion

But a council concerned with congestion caused by the Highways England closure of Junctions 3 to 4 on the motorway has said some diversion signs appear to have been tampered with.

Romsey Town Council, which previously warned of delays, said people should call police if they see diversion signs being changed or moved.

On Twitter the council said: ‘Progress of works remain on target.

‘Traffic heavy in localised areas please take care, do not block roundabouts or junctions

‘Some traffic management signs on A303 appear to have been tampered with if you see such action call police on 101.’

The motorway shut at 9pm on Friday and is due to open again at 6am on Monday.

Meanwhile, the M27 is shut between Junction 3, at the slip road to the M271, and Junction 4 at the turn-off for the M3, until 6am on Monday.

Roadworks will be taking place to finish the final stage of the £19 million project to replace the old Romsey Road bridge.

But there are concerns traffic will be poor due to cancelled trains after a freight train was derailed at Eastleigh on Tuesday. The line reopens on Monday.

Posting on Twitter, Chris Eyre said: ‘Road signs on diversions are inadequate.

‘How are you meant to know to follow the circle or the square?’
