Driver ignoring lockdown crashes into tree prompting major emergency response in Hampshire

The collision happened on an unlit road in Headley Down shortly after midnight on Wednesday.

Paramedics, police, firefighters were called to the scene.

The vehicle involved in the crash was carrying three people who police said ‘don’t live together’ – as the country remains in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hants Road Policing shared a picture of dozens of emergency service personnel at the scene of the incident on social media.

They tweeted: ‘5 Liphook Fire appliances, 3 SCAS ambulances, 4 police cars, because three people who don’t live together decided to go for a drive, 30 miles from home, for no reason and crash on an unlit country road, and collide with a tree. Critical Care team!! #COVID19 #StayHomeSaveLives #3241.

‘Not forgetting Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Critical Care team!!’

The account added that there were ‘multiple casualties and persons trapped’.

Hampshire and the rest of the country remains in lockdown with residents only allowed to leave their homes for the following reasons:

- Only go outside for food, health reasons or work (but only if you cannot work from home)

- If you go out, stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people at all times

- Wash your hands as soon as you get home

Do not meet others, even friends or family. You can spread the virus even if you don’t have symptoms.
