Chris Vaux, landlord at the Lord John Russell, saw the crash unfold.

He said: ‘I was walking back from the Co-Op with stuff for a picnic with the kids. As I walked by the Kings Theatre, the car swung violently into the bollard.

‘The driver looked very dazed and confused.

‘I think it just goes to show how important those bollards are, because it’s the second time this has happened in the past few months.’

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary added: ‘We were called at 9.10am to a report of a single-vehicle collision in Albert Road, involving a Ford Fiesta. No injuries were reported.’
