James Callaghan Drive in Portsmouth closed after bus comes off road - recap updates

A major road north of Portsmouth was closed after a bus hit a tree this afternoon.

James Callaghan Drive, which is near to QA Hospital, was shut to traffic after the crash shortly before 1.20pm.

The road was closed in both directions between the B2177 and Portsdown Hill Road.

Portchester Fire Station said a single decker bus had come off the road in James Callaghan Drive.

The bus has been secured and the ambulance service helped bring people off the bus.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesperson said two people were treated for minor injuries – you can read our latest update here.

First Bus, the company which operates the bus involved, said an investigation into the crash would be carried out.

Two people injured after bus carrying QA Hospital staff crashes near Portsmouth

Two people have been taken to hospital after a bus came off the road near Portsmouth this afternoon.

Passenger suffers ankle injury

Hampshire Constabulary said one person suffered an ankle injury.

A spokesperson said: ‘There was a road closure in place while the vehicle was recovered by the bus operator. The road had been cleared by 3.40pm.’

First Bus investigating

A statement from the company said: 'We can confirm two passengers were taken to hospital for treatment after a vehicle operating a P&R service for staff working at Queen Alexandra Hospital was involved in a road traffic incident on James Callahan Drive shortly after 1pm in which no other vehicles were involved. 

‘The company immediately dispatched a team to assist emergency services with their investigations, support the driver who was badly shaken following the incident and expedite recovery of the vehicle. The company will conduct its own investigation to establish the circumstances that led to the incident.’

2 people suffer minor injuries - ambulance service

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesperson said paramedics were called out just before 1.20pm today.

They said: 'We sent an ambulance, a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the incident. The bus had five people on board at the time of the accident and was in an unstable position so our HART team worked with Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service to stabilise it initially.

‘Two people on board had sustained minor injuries – one was treated at the scene by our staff but the second required further treatment at the QA Hospital. The three other people on board were uninjured.’

Emergency services, including police, fire and ambulance, have been called to James Callaghan Drive this afternoon because of an incident.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service has said a bus came off the road, but has now been secured.
