Woman escapes with minor injuries after being hit by freight train near Winchester

A WOMAN escaped with only minor injuries after being hit by a freight train outside a station in Hampshire.

The incident happened near Winchester at about 8am this morning and resulted in the train line being blocked between Basingstoke and Eastleigh.

Disruption is expected on the line until 1pm, South Western Railway has said, with services between Portsmouth Harbour and London Waterloo also being affected.

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) said that the woman has been taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital for further treatment.

A spokesman said: ‘We were contacted by Hampshire Fire Control Room at 8.02am who informed us that a freight train driver had reported they had hit a person just outside Winchester Railway Station.

‘We sent two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance, our Hazardous Area Response Team and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Critical Care Car to the incident.

‘Once the patient was located, they had fortunately only sustained minor injuries and have been taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital for further treatment.’

A spokesman for British Transport Police added: ‘We were called to Winchester railway station at 7.55am this morning (25/11) following concern for the welfare of a woman.

‘Officers quickly attended, and she was taken to a place of safety.’

SWR said that services between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour via Eastleigh will divert at Woking and run via Guildford and Havant.

Services between London Waterloo and Weymouth will divert at Woking and run via Guildford and Havant.

Tickets will be accepted at no extra cost to yourself on the following services:

- Great Western Railway services between Exeter St David's to London Paddington and Basingstoke to Reading.

- CrossCountry services between Basingstoke and Bournemouth.

Replacement buses have been requested for stations between Southampton and Basingstoke, more details to follow.
