Firefighters from Southsea were also called as their aerial ladder platform was needed.

Commander Deacon said: ‘It was a very, very good stop by the Gosport crews.

‘It was excellent work to quickly put out the fire and stop it from spreading into the roof space and the lofts.’

The fire started at the back of the house at about 2.30pm. The blaze was out by around 3.15pm. Once the fire was out, crews checked for any remaining hotspots in the loft.

Commander Deacon added: ‘On arrival, there was smoke and flames in the rear of the building at a high level.

‘It was a very severe fire and we used a jet to extinguish it.’

He said no-one was in the property when the first crew arrived. No-one was injured.

The whole of Albert Street was taped off to vehicles while the fire was dealt with. A smaller section was also taped off for pedestrians and nearby homes were evacuated.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: ‘I came home and saw all the smoke.

‘Luckily we live at the other end of the road. It was horrible to see it all.’
