NOSTALGIA: Leigh Park clubbers' sponsored walk

Regulars at this Leigh Park night club completed a five-mile walk in fancy dress in 1985.

A young local girl, Kerry Ingram, had been struck down with a virus which almost killed her.

So regulars at this nightclub in Somborne Drive, Leigh Park, donned fancy dress for a sponsored five-mile walk around the estate one Sunday morning in May 1985.

Club manageress Carol Donohoe read about Kerry’s plight in The News and organised the walk hoping to raise £1,000. It was to provide the youngster with specialised equipment for her home. Does anyone know if Kerry recovered?

If you were among the 1961 intake a reunion has been arranged next month.

It’s from 2pm on Wednesday, March 21 at The Wheelwright’s Arms, Emsworth Road, Havant.

Organiser Babs Fielder has booked a private room for the event but will be there for lunch from 12.30pm.

• Over the years thousands of sailors and dockyard workers have walked along Fountain Lake Jetty to the north of the former Royal Dockyard, as it once was. Here we see the jetty under construction in the 1872.

To the bottom is the railway line built to transfer the waste across the water to form Whale Island.

The two ships anchored on the far left are the gunnery ships HMS Excellent and HMS Calcutta.
