Cook's Main striker target

Main is the man in the manager’s sights as he edges closer to completing his summer transfer business.

And right-back Chris Sessegnon could also be in line to bolster Pompey’s defensive options for the new campaign.

Sessegnon has been training with Pompey since they returned for pre-season.

The 22-year-old plied his career in the National League South last season for Whitehawk.

Main is now the major attacking target Cook has been searching for, however.

The Doncaster Rovers striker has a year left on his agreement at the Keepmoat Stadium, after being handed a three-year deal in 2014.

He has been told he isn’t wanted by Darren Ferguson, who is undertaking major surgery on his squad after they were relegated from League One.

Main made 14 appearances at Donny last term, before he was sent out on loan to Oldham.

The 24-year-old bagged four goals in 18 outings for the Latics – with all of those arriving in a five-game spell.

That created the bizarre scenario of Main contributing to Oldham’s survival at the expense of Doncaster, who were relegated to League Two.

Main had a clause inserted into his loan which gave him the decision over any early end to his stay.

That paved the way for the South Shields-born talent to remain at Boundary Park when Doncaster looked to recall him in March.

The front man started his senior career at Darlington, where he became their youngest senior player at just 15 years and 318 days.

Tony Mowbray took the striker to Middlesbrough in 2011. There he scored six league goals in 13 starts, with an additional 35 appearances coming off the bench.

Main had a loan spell at Shrewsbury, before joining Doncaster two years ago under Paul Dickov.

He bagged 11 goals in 58 appearances while at the club, before being listed this summer.

The striker’s addition to the Pompey squad would place him alongside Michael Smith and Conor Chaplin as out-and-out attacking options.

Any move for Sessegnon would see him arrive as a defensive back-up player.

Sessegnon is a talent who first came to the Blues’ attention when playing in a 3-0 friendly win for Ebbsfleet against then-boss Andy Awford’s side two years ago.

He can play as a right-back or winger and made 38 appearances last season as Whitehawk lost out in the play-offs.

Sessegnon had a trial at Crawley last season and has also turned out for Dover Athletic, Eastbourne and Sutton United.

Pompey have so far signed seven players – Danny Rose, Tom Davies, Drew Talbot, Carl Baker, Michael Smith, Milan Lalkovic and Matt Clarke.
