Despite being the better side, Lee Molyneaux’s men fell to a devastating 1-0 defeat in the first qualifying round.

Borough created an opening straight from the kick-off with George Barker narrowly failing to meet the ball in a good position.

On six minutes Rory Williams had a long-range shot turned behind for a corner.

The visitors continued to look lively and Charlie Kennedy had a shot cleared off the goalline following a cross from Liam Robinson.

Midway through the half Molyneaux’s side were forced to replace the injured Richie Whittingham with Josh Huggins.

Ryan Woodford picked up a booking when he pulled a Cirencester attacker back following his poor back-pass.

Borough started to grow into the game but there were few chances for either team and the deadlock failed to be broken before half-time.

Borough eventually took control in the second period and started to open the home defence up.

Kennedy and Roberts both sent shots narrowly wide of the target after the interval.

In the final 10 minutes the hosts were hanging on and Matt Paterson twice went close to winning it for Gosport.

His shot from a deep cross rolled past the upright before the striker sent a superb curling effort whistling the wrong side of the post.

But there was to be agony for Borough when Cirencester scored against the run of play with the final kick of the game, with a deflected shot somehow finding the net.
