Jackett: Pompey still pose threat without Pitman

And the Blues boss is looking for his men to show they have a cutting edge as they go to struggling Fleetwood tonight.

Pompey are set to be without Brett Pitman for three weeks – plus fellow hamstring victim Gareth Evans – after they lost their leading marksman at Southend on Saturday.

The captain has 15 goals to his name this term, with Oli Hawkins the next in line with seven efforts.

Conor Chaplin and Jamal Lowe have hit five goals apiece, with Matt Clarke and Matty Kennedy bagging a trio off finishes this season.

Jackett is happy with Hawkins’ strike rate, but wants to see a threat coming from other areas of the pitch, too.

The Pompey manager is adamant, though, there is enough to worry their League One going forward.

Jackett said: ‘They are capable.

‘If you look at Oli’s goals-per-game record it’s pretty good. One of those seven, against Crawley, came from centre-back.

‘He goals-per-game ratio is good, though.

‘Conor Chaplin has two in three and we have Kal Naismith who was last season’s top scorer.

‘We always want more from Jamal Lowe but I thought he was excellent on Saturday, particularly when he went over to the right side.

‘Clarke’s got a few of goals and we’re hopeful Burgess and Ben Close can contribute.

‘Anton Walkes has got his first goal for us in four games.

‘So there are goals in and around the team.

‘We want to distribute it and there’s players away from Brett Pitman who are capable of taking forward our goalscoring needs.’
