And after news of their interest in Ipswich’s George Edmundson emerged, it’s clear the Blues are aiming high when it comes to bolstering that department.
With Regan Poole out for the season, we’ve looked at some of the right-sided defenders on the fringes or coming back from injury at second-tier clubs who could fit the bill.
9. Jaden Warner (Norwich)
The likes of League Two heavy hitters Notts County and Stockpot are both said to be keen on the Norwich talent. Made two Championship starts this term, but the 21-year-old is expected to leave Carrow Road on loan this month. Photo: Jack Thomas - WWFC
10. Ciaran Brennan (Sheffield Wednesday)
Looks like the Irishman could be available this month. Not featured for Sheffield Wednesday, but just picked up some loan minutes with Hartlepool. In reality, Pompey will probably have their sights set higher. Photo: Frank Reid
11. Rarmani Edmonds-Green (Huddersfield)
Gone through a topsy--turvy time at Huddersfield. Spent time out on loan at Wigan last term which didn't go well, then came back in under Neil Warnock. Had bits and pieces off the bench for Darren Moore and operated as defensive midfielder. Deal up in the summer, though, there's an option on agreement. Has the kind of versatility which would be useful with Pompey short at right-back presently. Photo: Clive Brunskill
12. Michael Ihiekwe (Sheff Wed)
Looked exactly the kind of option Pompey would try to recruit with classy operator out of favour under Danny Rohl, but the 30-year-old has come in from the cold in the past three games and earned rave reviews. Could be one to keep an eye on if playing time dwindles this month. Photo: Steve Ellis Steve Ellis
