The 22-year-old American could be called upon for the Papa John’s Trophy tie at London Road with the Blues expected to make wholesale changes for the last-16 fixture.

None of the 11 who started Sunday’s FA Cup defeat against Bristol City will line up from the beginning against the Posh – ruling our current No1 Craig MacGillivray.

And with Alex Bass suffering a dead leg ahead of the trip to Ashton Gate and a doubt for the Trophy game, Turnbull could finally be given his chance.

The University of Notre Dame graduate joined the Blues in March 2020 following a successful trial.

He had loan spells at the Hawks and Dulwich Hamlet at the start of the season, but failed to feature for either non-league side before returning to Fratton Park.

Turnbull was on the bench for Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at the Robins.

Youngsters Harry Kavanagh, Charlie Bell, Alfie Stanley and Harvey Rew are also expected to feature against Peterborough, having played in previous Papa John’s Trophy games this season.

But neither Eoin Teggart or Gerard Storey will continue their first-team development with a run-out, with both Irishmen currently back in their native Northern Ireland.

Jordy Hiwula, Paul Downing, James Bolton, Bryn Morris and Ben Close will be handed game time in a bid to get much-needed minutes under their belts.

Haji Mnoga won’t feature, though, with the defender suspended after picking up two yellow cards in the competition.
