The former Pompey boss was spotted in the crowd at The Valley on Tuesday night as he took in Charlton’s 4-2 win against managerless Exeter in League One.

But he wasn’t the only out-of-work manager seen in attendance, with ex-Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson also noticed watching on from the stands in south London and taking stock of the action.

Exeter are on the lookout for a new boss after Matt Taylor left St James Park last week to take up the manager’s job at Championship Rotherham.

Meanwhile, Addicks boss Garner has been finding himself under pressure in recent weeks, with his Charlton side picking up only their third League One win of the season in midweek.

The Londoners currently sit 11th in the table and face Pompey in front of the Sky cameras on Monday night as Danny Cowley’s side look to pick up their first league win in four games.

Jackett, who has been out of work since his Leyton Orient departure in February, recently admitted he favours specialising in recruitment and squad planning if he were to return the game.

He told the Do Not Scratch Your Eyes podcast: ‘There’s several roles, there’s different ones, I am open-minded.

‘I do want to get back into football, but, similarly, it would have to be the right thing and the right role which uses my experience - but I doubt whether it would be front line management.’

However, no doubt, the 60-year-old would be tempted by another shot in the managerial hot seat following spells at Watford, Swansea, Millwall, Wolves and the Blues.

In just over three-and-a-half years at Fratton Park, Jackett led Pompey to the Checkatrade Trophy in March 2019 and two League One play-off semi-finals.

Like Jackett, Ferguson has been out of work since February – when he resigned from his role as Posh boss.

He’s currently 33/1 to be the next Exeter boss and is 16/1 to be named the new manager of Newport County.
