And that may also impact upon the Oakwell future of Cameron McGeehan.

Gerhard Struber’s team must today beat fifth-placed Nottingham Forest (3pm) to have any chance of survival.

Even then that might not be enough, currently standing five points adrift of safety with two fixtures remaining.

Former Pompey favourite Conor Chaplin has scored 13 times for bottom club Tykes during his maiden Championship season.

However, he has netted just once since football resumed following lockdown.

Struber’s side are chasing Hull, Luton and Charlton as they seek to scramble out of the relegation spots.

The Tykes, of course, were promoted in second place from League One in 2019-20 after beating Kenny Jackett’s side to an automatic spot.

Their fate may also influence the standing of McGeehan at Oakwell.

The midfielder was allowed to move to Fratton Park on loan for the remainder of the season and is purported to be surplus to requirements.

However, a return to League One might change matters, with McGeehan still having 12 months left on his contract.

McGeehan’s penalty miss in the Blues’ play-off semi-final second leg at Oxford United, ended hopes of a Championship return.
