The Blues are ready to show their faith in the midfielder, in the wake of his penalty shootout heartache in the play-off defeat to Oxford United on Monday.

And McGeehan is receptive to the prospect of making his loan stay from Barnsley into a permanent move to PO4.

It’s been a dreadful few days for the 25-year-old who was the fall guy from 12 yards in the 5-4 shootout defeat, after it finished 2-2 across two legs with the U’s.

McGeehan was in tears after the game and left distraught by the key miss which has brought the curtain down on the season.

There now looks set to be a summer of upheaval with players out of contract and loanees departing – all against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.

But the financial concerns moving forward have not swayed Pompey from their attempt to land McGeehan, who has a year remaining on his contract with his parent club.

The Londoner has made 17 appearances since arriving in January, with high hopes over the impact he would make.

McGeehan’s form has fluctuated in his stay, after arriving with limited playing time in the Championship this season.

Kenny Jackett has used McGeehan in the 10 role and more frequently in the holding midfield position, in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

Working with the former Luton man at close quarters has cemented Jackett’s admiration for the player, with the Pompey boss already speaking publicly of his desire to bring him in on a permanent basis.Barnsley boss Gerhard Struber has deemed McGeehan surplus to requirement at Oakwell and a permanent move appeals to the former Norwich trainee, who has family in the area and was raised up the A3 in Kingston.
