The Blues midfielder’s re-emergence after a year of injury pain proved to be one of the only bright spots of his side’s excruciating play-off disappointment against Oxford United.

Morris put a nightmare hip injury behind him to start both play-off games and put in a pair of sturdy showings, after the shock move from Kenny Jackett to drop Tom Naylor.

Now after just 10 appearances in his 18 months at Fratton Park, the 24-year-old is finally looking to show what he can do.

Morris said: ‘It was bitter-sweet for me at the end of the season.

‘What happened hurt a lot at the time, but you just can’t dwell on it too much.

‘I know when you play in the game and watch it is two different things, but In the game I felt we were the best team over the two legs without that cutting edge - but we couldn’t finish them off.

‘You’ve just got to dust yourself down and look forward to the next season, like the gaffer said after the game.

‘It was raw but what he said then was true: we have to look forward to the next season and come back stronger.

‘After a long time out I was just pleased to be back playing, but to not only lose but lose on penalties hurt.

‘Before we came back I thought my best hope was to nick a spot on the bench.

‘I did well in the games before and in training, though, so to play both games was pleasing - and now I can’t wait to show everyone what I can do.’
