Charlie Daniels welcomed the competition he faces from Lee Brown for the Pompey left-back spot and admitted: It will benefit both of us and the team.

The 34-year-old completed his much-anticipated free-transfer move to Fratton Park on Saturday, before watching the Blues in action against Hull from the stands alongside fellow newbie George Byers.

He arrives following Cam Pring’s return to parent club Bristol City and is set to compete with Brown for a starting place on the left-hand side of the Pompey defence.

It will be interesting to see who manager Kenny Jackett turns to for Tuesday night’s home game against fellow promotion-contenders Lincoln.

Brown has been a regular at left-back this season when fit and been a key performer in the Blues’ pursuit of a Championship return.

Daniels, though, has a wealth of experience following a Bournemouth career that saw him progress up the Football League pyramid and play Premier League football for five seasons.

Saturday’s 4-0 defeat against Hull may tempt the manager to freshen things up, with Byers also in contention.

But whoever Jackett chooses, Daniels said the competition will benefit both him and Brown – and ultimately the club.

The former Shrewsbury defender told the club website: ‘It's like any top team - they have competition throughout the whole squad.

‘So for me and Lee, if we can make each other better, then it improves the whole team.

‘So I'd like to think me and him are in competition but we are in it for the sake of the team - and the idea of the team is to get promoted. That's the goal.’
