However, his maiden Black Cats outing was far from perfect, with the 24-year-old conceding twice in the Mackems’ 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.

That gave the Fratton faithful the opportunity to see their former stopper in action for the first time since his permanent departure in July.

Despite having no chance to stop Dennis Adeniran’s effort from outside the box in the first half, Bass made a poor clearance from his box which played a major role leading up to the Owls’ second.

Following his debut, both Pompey and Sunderland fans have taken to social media to give their assessments of the keeper’s Black Cats debut.

@____Pingu____: Pompey fans said how bad Alex Bass’ distribution was and they were spot on based on this viewing. Shocking pass before and now one that’s cost a goal.

@DanKnight10: Alex Bass showing that he can't play out from the back and why Danny Cowley didn't want him.

@PlannerMarj: Two utterly dreadful passes out from the back by Alex Bass in the last five mins. First one out of play, the second was punished.

@pompeypaul72: Oh dear, Alex Bass. That wasn’t pretty to see.

@LiamMar00392391: Dear me that Alex Bass distribution is horrific.

@Jaaydar_: Alex Bass is not it.

@antoneee_x: Safe to say Bass won’t be getting any starts in the first team this season.

@hettonpete1: Bass known for being a good shot stopper but poor at everything else. Perfectly demonstrated there. Not a good signing.

@JohnMar02279600: Looks like we still need a new goalkeeper. This guy is awful.

@edmac316: I’ve said it once and ill say it again, excellent business from Pompey actually getting a fee for Bass, regardless of how little it actually was.

Fair play to his agent as well, bagging him a 3 year deal.
