Indeed, the Blues’ last visit to Vale Park was in April 2000 in the old English League Division One, now known as the Championship.
The last fixture saw Tony Pulis’ men fall to a 2-0 defeat, with names including Darren Moore, Steve Claridge and Shaun Derry all featuring in the loss.
Twenty-two years later and in much different circumstances, Danny Cowley’s men take on the Valiants in a bid to continue their impressive unbeaten start to the League One campaign.
But where are the 11 players who started for Pompey against Port Vale in 2000 now?
We’ve taken a look at the Blues’ last starting XI who featured in the last trip to Vale Park more than 20 years ago.

5. Adrian Whitbread
The former Blues skipper was the second of Tony Pulis’ men to be given his marching orders in the defeat. After surgery to his knee in July 2000, the centre-back would never play for Pompey again as he departed Fratton Park for Luton five months later. After retiring in 2003, Whitbread had spells as a coach with MK Dons, Brentford, Leicester before becoming manager of the Puerto Rico national team in 2017. Harper spent nearly five years with the Blues, which included promotion to the Premier League, after making a £300,000 move from Walsall in March 2000. The Scot would go on to play for Norwich, Leicester and Stoke before retiring in 2009. The midfielder still has Pompey close to his heart, making regular visits to PO4 and, in the summer, became first-team scout at Hibs. Photo: Phil Cole
During his two-year stay at Fratton Park, the popular midfielder made 55 appearances for the Blues before making a £400,000 move to Crystal Palace in 2004. After retiring in 2013, Derry became head coach at Notts County before being appointed boss at Cambridge in 2015. The former midfielder returned to Selhurst Park in 2019 to become a professional development coach before being appointed first-team coach as part of Patrick Viera’s backroom staff last summer. The versatile midfielder joined the Blues for £100,000 in 1998 under Alan Ball after winning three Danish Championships with Brendby IF. He would go on to make 119 appearances at Fratton Park before departing in April 2002. He returned to his boyhood club Frem in 2002 before retiring later that year. Photo: Allan Hutchings
