Cowley took to the Fratton Park hot seat on Friday as he aim to guide the Blues to League One promotion.

Less than 24 hours after his appointment was confirmed, the former Lincoln boss – along with brother and assistant Nicky – was in the dugout for Pompey’s visit of play-off rivals Ipswich.

It represented the first time Pompey had fought back to win a game after conceding the first goal in almost two years. The last time was a 2-1 defeat of Coventry in April 2019.

And the result pleased Blues chairman Eisner.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘First comeback victory since 2019. A winning start, a good start. #Pompey.’

Director Eric Eisner praised how Pompey moved back up to seventh in the table and right back into the promotion picture.

He said: ‘Just what the Dr ordered. Big win-3 points. Back in the race...@Pompey.’
