The lowdown on Leeds midfielder and rumoured Portsmouth, Swindon and Gillingham target Mateusz Bogusz

Pompey have been linked with the 19-year-old along with both Swindon and Gillingham, with Kenny Jackett known to be in the market for a midfielder - specifically a player in that area who offers something going forward.

Boguz was born in Poland and came through the ranks at Ruch Chorzow, where he made his debut at just 16. Despite his formative years, Bogusz was give the number 10 shirt for the 2018-19 season and went on to score six goals before a move to Leeds was agreed at the start of last year.

After signing for Leeds, Bogusz was part of the side who travelled to Australia for pre-season in 2019. He appeared on the bench against Manchester United and then followed that up bagging a spectacular strike from outside the box against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Bogusz signed a two-and-a-half year deal when joining Leeds, but after quickly making a big impression was tied down to a new three-year deal in the summer. The playmaker has been linked with a move to Italian side Napoli in the past, but now is seen as big prospect at Elland Road and is widely expected to head out loan this term.

Bogusz went on to become part of Leeds’ title-winning under-23 side under Carlos Corberan, winning the Professional Development League northern section in 2018-19 and then becoming national champions beating Birmingham in the final.

Marcelo Bielsa described Bogusz as an ‘offensive playmaker’ when naming the talent as a substitute in his side’s victory over Swansea in July. ‘He is growing in training. He's an offensive playmaker,’ Bielsa told Leeds Live. ‘I thought he would be an option for today's match He is more offensive than (Jamie) Shackleton and (Robbie) Gotts. For this reason, I considered him in case we needed him in the match.’

Bogusz has a Leeds appearance under his belt this season, picking up a 78-minute outing in the Carabao Cup meeting with Hull. which the Tiger won 9-8 on penalties. Bogusz picked up two appearances last term - including a substitute outing in the 4-0 league win over Charlton.

A Polish age-group international, Bogusz has picked up games through the age categories. In 2019, he was part of his country’s side in the under-20 World Cup in his homeland. Last month, he scored his first under-21 goals with a two-goal return against Latvia.

Bogusz’ career stats show an average return across 90 minutes (according to Wyscout) of 0.22 goals (0.12 xG), 75 actions, two shots on goal, 35 passes with 80 per cent completion, 3.81 dribbles, 27 duels with 39 per cent won and two interceptions.
