Following a goalless draw with little between the sides, the second-round fixture headed into a penalty shoot-out at a packed Bypass Ground.
However, Ciaran Martin and Chinedu Agu both missed their spot-kicks, with Aaron Scott grabbing the winner for the hosts, who claimed a 7-6 victory.
And here are our Pompey player ratings...
9. Fraser Thomas - 7
(Replaced by Chinedu Agu on 75 minutes) Pompey's best player in the first half, offering their greatest threat and going close to scoring on several occasions. Yet faded after the break and the Blues couldn't get him on the ball enough. Photo: Jason Brown
10. Jermaine Osifo - 6
(Replaced by Nathaniel Chioma on 61 minutes) Operated on the left flank and there were flashes of pace, skill and directness. Needed to get involved more. Photo: Jason Brown
11. Dane Bailey - 6
Couldn't fault energy levels or work-rate, but got little change out of Romsey's powerful centre-half pairing. Still, he never stopped trying. Photo: Jason Brown
