The Middlesbrough midfielder, who is presently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, was the subject of transfer window interest from the Blues.

However, the move has today fallen through, with agreement unable to be thrashed out for the 26-year-old.

It represented a complex arrangement, consisting of cutting short Wing’s Hillsborough loan and ending his Boro contract by mutual consent to become a free agent.

He would then move to Fratton Park for the remainder of the season, with the opportunity to secure a long-term presence.

Yet the situation proved beyond Pompey, while financially it was also going to be a stretch for a player who has appeared 80 times in the Championship for Middlesbrough.

Wing has featured 24 times and scored once during his Sheffield Wednesday loan spell this season.

The Blues expect to unveil the signing ahead of Charlton’s visit to Fratton Park for a League One encounter, but the new boy has not been registered in time to play.
