Millwall boss Alex Neil responds to Middlesbrough and West Brom managerial talk ahead of Portsmouth contest
Millwall currently sit sixth in the Championship ahead of their trip to Pompey next week.
Alex Neil has called speculation over his Millwall future ‘nonsense’ amid Middlesbrough and West Brom talk.
The Lions have enjoyed an impressive start to the new season and currently sit sixth, taking 25 points from their opening 15 matches.
The south London outfit have been one of the Championship’s early surprises, with Millwall occupying a play-off ahead of their trip to Pompey next week.
But that fast start has attracted some interest from rival clubs, with reports linking Neil with Middlesbrough as they begin their search for Rob Edwards’ successor.
Championship interest in Millwall boss
The Boro boss is poised to depart the Riverside Stadium to join Premier League strugglers Wolves, less than six months after being appointed in the north east.
Middlesbrough sit second in the standings after Saturday’s triumph over Birmingham City, five points behind runaway leaders Coventry City.
But it’s not just Boro who are keeping tabs with the 44-year-old, with journalist Alan Nixon touting West Brom with the former Norwich and Stoke man.
The Baggies have had a tough start under Ryan Mason, with Saturday’s 2-1 triumph over Oxford United just their second win in five games.
And pressure is increasing on the former Spurs coach, with the Hawthorns outfit already losing ground on the play-offs.
Amid talk of potential interest from Millwall’s Championship rivals, Neil has responded to those reports, insisting claims of a move are ‘nonsense.’
‘I certainly haven’t seen that, no,’ the head coach told the Southwark News after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Preston North End.
‘It’s not even on my radar. I don’t even know anything about it. It’s the first time I’ve heard about it. You’ve caught me off guard with that one. Nonsense.’
Alex Neil’s stint at Millwall

Neil was appointed at The Den on December 30, 2024, with Millwall sat 13th in the Championship after a tough start to the campaign.
The Lions would go on a resurgence in the second half of the 2024-25 campaign under the former Preston boss, winning 13 of his 26 games in charge in all competitions.
The south London outfit would also do the double of Pompey, with a 2-0 win over the Blues at Fratton Park in January followed up by a 2-1 triumph on home soil in March.
Their impressive run would see Millwall climb up the standings but missed out on a play-off spot by two points on the final day of the season after defeat to already-promoted Burnley.
The Lions have continued where they left off last term and make the trip to PO4 after the international break 11 points above John Mousinho’s side.
