Some players stepped up to the mark amid a positive early start from John Mousinho’s side, while others have come up hugely short amid the team’s recent struggles.
Pompey writer Jordan Cross gives his honest appraisal of how the players have done so far - do you agree with his marks out of 10?

13. Florian Bianchini 4
Swansea loanee has been hugely underwhelming, returning a single assist from nine outings and, by the time the Millwall game comes around, would not have featured for a month. Doubly frustrating given Bianchini's talent is clear, but ongoing stay has to be under the microscope at present. Photo: Alun Roberts

14. Hayden Matthews 5
Aussie defender has fallen short of expectations so far this season. When Pompey, with their current resources, pay £1.2m for a player they are expecting more than what they've seen so far. Looked wobbly in Carabao Cup and at times in league. Still a youngster, though, but is on a fast-track Championship education. | Graham Hunt/ProSportsImages

Still looks very raw as South African adapts to the Championship. Some promising combative moments but also some real naivety and carelessness, seemingly through his eagerness to impress. Glimpses of potential, so hopes midfielder can improve. Photo: Simon Roe

Been a tough Pompey baptism this term after injury woe. Really toiled on debut against Reading and was given a torrid runaround at Birmingham, though he was left horribly exposed in left-back berth. Wrexham display was heartening, but questions of centre-back again at Hull. A strong character, however, with the fortitude to grow this term. Photo: Simon Roe
