Portsmouth transfer news: Pompey in 'advanced talks' with Luton Town about former Exeter forward
Could Pompey be closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window?
Pompey are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Luton Town forward Millenic Alli.
Football League World are today claiming the Blues and Hatters are deep in conversation about a move for the former Exeter City attacker, with the 25-year-old being tipped to seal a loan switch to Fratton Park.
Pompey are yet to register any new signings as the halfway point of the transfer window approaches. Yet Alli could soon break that pattern if reports about a potential deal come to fruition.
Saturday’s game against Sheffield Wednesday was a fixture earmarked for new signings to arrive by.
Who is Millenic Alli?
Alli has been at Luton for a year, after moving to the Hatters from League One Exeter last January.
He was snapped up by former Kenilworth Road boss Matt Bloomfield 12 months ago after bagging 12 goals in all competitions for the Grecians over the first half of the 2024-25 season.
Although the fee was undisclosed, reports claim Luton paid £1.5m for the forward, who was signed from non-league Halifax in the 2024 January transfer window.
Signed to add extra firepower to the Hatters’ Championship survival bid, Alli scored four goals in 16 appearances for the second ha;f of last season. But it wasn’t enough to help Luton stay in the second tier as they finished third from bottom and returned to League One.
This season, the Irishman - who is considered a left-sided forward or someone who can operate centrally - has scored just one goal for Luton as they sit seventh in the League One table and just a point outside the play-off positions.
That goal came at the end of August, when Bloomfield was still in charge at Kenilworth. However, since Jack Wilshere was appointed manager in October, Alli has featured just eight times. Meanwhile, he has not been named in any of the Hatters’ past five match-day squads.
What’s been said about Millenic Alli in the past?
Following his move to Luton, Bloomfield said: ‘Milli is a player who we have come up against a few times and he's always impressed with his pace, power and individual dribbling ability to get his team up the pitch.
‘If you look at the goals he has scored, he's a brave boy, and with his non-league background, he has a real hunger to prove himself at the levels above.
‘Physically, he's got the capabilities to step up and with some work on the training ground with us, and that desire and pace at the top of the pitch, we believe that he can be a good asset for us both now and developing further into the future.’
