The fifth-placed Black Cats have signed Tommy Smith on a free transfer.

The ex-Ipswich Town centre-back has penned a deal until the end of the season at the Stadium of Light.

Smith arrives as cover for Bailey Wright after he suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

The 29-year-old had been training with the Tractor Boys’ under-23s after departing MLS side Colarado Rapid.

Smith was linked with a move to Pompey during the January transfer window, along with Wigan.
