Portsmouth new-boy Cameron Pring confident he can make Fratton Park impact following move from Bristol City

The Bristol City left-back has arrived on the south coast on a season-long loan, becoming the Blues’ second signing of the summer after Sean Raggett’s permanent switch.

He will compete with Lee Brown for the left full-back role and aim to build on previous loans at Walsall and Newport County, amongst others, respectively.

Last season the 23-year-old made 24 appearances for the Saddlers in League Two.

That saw him come up against Pompey in the EFL Trophy at the Banks’s Stadium – a game Kenny Jackett’s side won 2-1.

Pring joked that clash came soon after his recovery from a knee injury and would explain why he was ‘chasing shadows a bit!’

However, after signing on at Fratton Park, he said he was ready to show he can step up and deliver for the Blues at League One level.

He told the club website: ‘It’s really exciting for me. I got told at the beginning of the week and I was absolutely buzzing.

‘I played Pompey last season in the EFL Trophy for Walsall and felt I did alright, although I’d just come back from injury and was chasing shadows a bit!

‘But I do think I can make that step up and one of the things that tempted me here was that there’s a team capable of winning promotion. I can’t wait to get started.

‘I was a winger when I was younger and got converted to a left-back – first and foremost you’ve got to be able to defend.

‘But when you win the ball back, you’ve also got to be able to drive forward and I’d say I’m good at that side as well.

’The gaffer has said that he expects to me to do that, with Ronan Curtis looking to come inside at times.’

Pring added he was up for the battle to become Pompey’s first-choice left-back.

He said competition for places benefits everyone.

‘Everyone wants a bit of competition because it makes you play better and really fight for that position,’ he said.

‘It means you’re working harder in every training session rather than just going through the motions.’
