The Republic of Ireland international bagged his 12th goal of the season when he netted in the 62nd minute of Saturday’s FA Cup clash, putting the Blues 3-1 up.

Curtis’ manner of marking the scoring feat also caught the eye, waving away his team-mates before shrugging in the direction of the South Stand and crossing his arms, bearing a grumpy demeanour.

His curious actions were immediately picked up by social media and those present.

However, Curtis revealed it was simply a message for his mum, Marie, who told him before the 4-2 success that she had a gut feeling he wouldn’t net.

A smiling Curtis said: ‘There was nothing in it really, just a celebration that I wanted to do.

‘My mum was saying “You won’t score, you won’t score” so I said to her “We’ll see in the afternoon” – luckily, I came up with a goal.

‘It was a great kick from Bassy and went straight through, I just got my body in front of the defender and slapped it in.’
