Swindon boss Richie Wellens has refused to rule out a move for Brett Pitman.

The striker remains without a club after being released by Pompey earlier this summer.

Pitman scored 42 goals in 99 appearances during his three-year spell at Fratton Park following his arrival for an undisclosed fee from Ipswich in July 2017.

The former Bournemouth marksman fell well out of favour towards the end of his Blues career.

He was left in the cold for the majority of 2020 and had a period training with the Cherries' under-21s.

Pitman was also not required to return for duty after the lockdown period ahead of Pompey's play-off semi-final defeat to Oxford

The 32-year-old is still a free agent after his south-coast departure, although he told The News he's not ready to retire just yet.

Wellens has made no secret he wants to bolster his attacking options as the Robins prepare for a return to League One.

While the ex-Oldham manager insisted he's not interested in Nicky Maynard, he didn't deny potential swoops for Pitman, Peterborough playmaker George Cooper and Ipswich striker James Norwood.

Speaking to Swindon Town Supporters' Club's Facebook account, Wellens said: ‘Nicky Maynard would be a no. We enquired about him and tried to take him last season.

‘If someone really says no to us then I'm really loathed to go back and revisit that, so that would be a no.

‘The other three are good players.’

Ex-Pompey midfielder Dion Donohue is currently training with Swindon ahead of a potential switch.
