The Isle of Wight-born winger ended a 10-year association with the Blues, after scoring one goal in five appearances.

All of his outings arrived in the EFL Trophy, though, with the academy product failing to feature in League One.

Jackett admitted it was difficult for Maloney to dislodge Ronan Curtis, Ryan Williams and Marcus Harness in the Pompey pecking order.

But should the 18-year-old move on from Volendam for a fee then the Blues will receive a windfall from the sale.

Pompey boss Jackett said: ‘It is a good opportunity for Leon and we hope he does well.

‘The club has a strong sell-on clause with the situation and it’s a good opportunity for him.

‘You don’t see many young players go abroad or many go to Holland, but I’m sure he can do well.

‘There’s an opportunity for him and we wanted to protect the club with a sell-on.

‘Leon had good games for us, definitely, but getting past our three wingers at the moment is pretty tough.

‘Ronan Curtis, Ryan Williams and Marcus Harness are our options. Then the positions behind the striker we have the likes of Gareth Evans and Recco Hackett-Fairchild, so it’s not easy to get into that group.’

Maloney’s departure left some supporters disappointed, who felt he should have continued his promising progress at Fratton Park.

The youngster has yet to feature for his new side.

In the meantime, Jackett stressed Pompey remain committed to developing academy products with the aim of producing first-team regulars.

The manager added: ‘We’ve done pretty well with players coming out of our academy.

‘Alex Bass is just getting into the side and it’s been pretty good, while Jack Whatmough and Brandon Haunstrup have been unlucky with injuries but are still young and have time on their side.

‘We always try to produce players out of our academy.’
