The under-21 aces Portsmouth could target if a salary cap is implemented - from Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Everton and Wolves

It’s an avenue that Pompey may have to take should a salary cap be implemented for the upcoming season.

League One sides could be restricted to a £2.5m wage ceiling for the 2020-21 campaign and limited to 22 senior players.

However, players under 21 will be exempt and chief executive Mark Catlin admitted that’s where the Blues may have to focus their recruitment if there is a salary cap.

He said: ‘Although with under-21s exempt, we’ll have to focus heavily on the under-21 market – and will adapt our market accordingly.’

If that is the case then it’ll be crucial Pompey sign youngsters who will be ready for the demands of League One football.
