The Republic of Ireland international is set to be Danny Cowley’s fifth signing of the January transfer window after agreeing to move to Fratton Park on a permanent deal.

But what do both sets of fans think of the switch?

Here’s what we discovered by gauging opinion via Twitter...

Pompey

@Perry_PFC: quite happy with Aiden O’brien if we get him

@FUTCONCEPTS: There's still time to not sign Aiden O'Brien btw.

@84Knight: Sunderland are as bad as us at getting out this division.

Their players just like ours have proved not to be good enough over the last few seasons.

How is signing the worst of these going to improve our chances of promotion?

@daninfratton: Imagine the atmosphere at Fratton Park tonight if we really see Aiden O’Brien as someone to get excited about. Blimey. #Pompey

@Matt25Smithers: What eere we supposed to be existed about ??? It’s another dead January like always.

@sampfcx: James Norwood. Kayden Jackson. Danny Hylton. Plenty more options, players that score goals. We go for Aiden O’Brien…

Something is very seriously wrong with the recruitment and ownership of this football club. Snubbed Thompson when he’s exactly what we need as well, for Gills. Lol

@davidhowes04: People writing off Aiden O’Brien already. Did the same with Hume.

I remember last summer fans were saying Cameron Pring wasn’t a great loan signing. look at him now. An established championship regular.

Never write off a player who’s yet too kick a ball for the club.

@Len87668696: Another Sunderland reserve,

Sunderland

@Philip_RJ89: Aiden O’Brien to Portsmouth? Excellent news if true.

Shifts a major piece of deadwood from the squad & lumbers Pompey with a bang average player in the process. Win-win.

@aidanlowther: Good luck at Pompey AOB, always gave 100% for us, try bag one against Rotherham and Wigan

@returnoflemack: What a fantastic day.

@mizugorouZZ: 100% the bloke is a class impact player.

@LewissBaxterr15: Average on the ball, terrible finisher, looses composure so easily. Only attribute is his hard work.

@EddyGray19: He’s a good forward. Shame he’s going if I’m honest. But he’s not getting games.

@PlannerMarj: I’m no lover of O’Brien, but he was a useful squad player.

@marleygibson4: Real shame. Quite liked him tbh, was 90% of a great player.

Did all the hard stuff well, just could never get that last 10% right.

@StephenStubbs5: Hard worker but unfortunately just never really got going for us, flashes that he could be a decent league 1 striker but good move for all involved
