He struggled for regular minutes during the Robins’ League Two title charge, making only 13 appearances before returning to Fratton Park ahead of schedule last month.

May will be hoping to play more of a prominent role at the Wood.

The National League is a division the Fratton youth product knows well, having had successful stints at Sutton and Aldershot earlier in his career.

Boreham Wood are bidding to reach the Football League for the first time in their history. They currently sit fifth in the table but have games in hand on all the team above them.

The Meadow Lane boss told his club’s website: ‘Adam is a player we have kept a very close eye on over the last year, following his successful loans both at Sutton United and Aldershot Town.

‘He will bring great knowledge of the level, even though he still only 22. He comes into a group that is very positive and we hope he will aid us in getting to where we want to get to.

‘He was involved in the session on Tuesday and got to know the squad and I honestly believe he will be a very good addition.

‘He has great ability when in possession of the football, will go box-to-box, and will give us great energy and legs especially playing in the manner we do with a high intensity.

‘He will go straight into the squad against his previous club Aldershot.’

May has made 30 appearances for Pompey since his debut in April 2015.

His two-year deal at Fratton Park expires at the end of this season.
