A Hampshire Cricket League team were bowled out for a very unlucky 13 - one of the lowest totals in the tournament’s 50-year history.

And eight of those runs were extras!

Godshill could only muster nine players for their Division 5 North West fixture against Over Wallop.

Friends and youngsters had to be drafted in to ensure the fixture was fulfilled. Failure to do so would have seen them docked 20 points - the last thing they needed as they seek to avoid relegation.

It was to their credit, therefore, that they at least fielded a team, even if it was two short.

‘Not our finest moment, but better than conceding!’ Godshill tweeted.

Other Hampshire League clubs in recent weeks have postponed fixtures due to a lack of numbers.

In Division 6 South East, for example, Denmead (twice), Froxfield 2nds and Fair Oak 5ths have conceded in the last fortnight.

In Division 5 South East, United Services 2nds and Portchester have also failed to fulfil fixtures in recent weeks.

Of the nine Godshill players, only three managed to score any runs with captain Matt Robb and Roy Roddison top scoring with two. Pete Blincowe, on his first appearance for the club, scored a single. Top scorer were the eight byes.

Wallop lost a wicket en route to reaching their small target in the fourth over.

Fellow Hampshire League club Damerham paid tribute to Godshill on social media for their efforts in ensuring a game took place, even though it only lasted 18.3 overs.

‘Takes a lot of heart to convince kids and friends to show up for a game when everyone’s on holiday or injured, and you know you’re gonna get thumped, to avoid the -20 for conceding and have a chance of staying up next week. We salute our valiant neighbours,’ they tweeted.

Though 13 is very low, there have been much lower scores recorded in the grassroots game.

Only last year, Augustinians were skittled for just six in a cup tie against Southowram.

Meanwhile, in 2014, Wirral were dismissed for just THREE in a Cheshire League game against Haslington - courtesy of one run from their number 11 batsman and two byes!

Overton’s innings mirrored Godshill’s in that most of the runs were extras – 12 of them in their case.
