Popular axe throwing venue run by veterans unveils plans to sell alcohol

The activity centre has applied for permission to sell alcohol

An axe-throwing centre run by military veterans has applied for permission to sell alcohol six days a week.

Down Range Axe Throwing, in North Cross Street, Gosport, has submitted an application seeking permission for a new premises licence.

The activity centre wants permission to sell alcohol between 2pm and 7pm from Tuesday to Thursday, from 2pm until 9pm on Fridays, noon until 9pm on Saturdays, and noon until 7.30pm on Sundays. The application was received by Gosport Borough Council’s licensing team on September 3.

As previously reported by The News, Down Range Axe Throwing, established in 2023, is the brainchild of former soldier Colin Smith, who launched the business with tattoo artist and fellow ex-serviceman Ben Davies. Both served in the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment.

The venue has five lanes where visitors can hurl axes at targets, with staff members keeping a watchful eye to make sure that everyone stays safe.

The business describes itself as offering a recreational experience for everyone from axe-throwing enthusiasts to beginners, with a focus on precision, skill and fun. The council received one objection to the licensing application during the 28-day consultation period.

Resident Paul Campbell objected to the application over concerns about noise and disturbance.

In a letter to the council, Mr Campbell said his main concern is that “the music will increase, and the noise will increase”, adding that this will cause his “stress levels to increase”.

He said: “Over the years that they have been open, it has affected my health and wellbeing due to the lack of consideration.

“What is to stop people just coming in for a drink? I think it is the wrong environment to sell alcohol.

“My main concern is the music and the noise in general. If they can sort that out, then I am sure I can be ok with that.”

No objections were received from authorities.

The application had been due to go before Gosport Borough Council’s Licensing Sub-Board on October 22. The committee was being asked to consider the application and decide whether to grant the premises licence.

However, Gosport Borough Council said the meeting was opened and then adjourned and will instead be held on another date.

A new date has not yet been confirmed by the local authority.
