Work began earlier this year to transform the Mariott Hotel in North Harbour to make it ‘the best’ in Portsmouth.

The renovation is expected to cost between £5m and £7m and will see the four-star hotel clad in gold and brown, its windows upgraded and then work undertaken to revamp the conference facilities, with room upgrades planned at a later date.

Director of sales and marketing Martin Waters said the work was progressing well and the exterior should be finished in November, with additional landscaping work to the grounds set to take place and a new energy-efficient sign for the hotel’s ‘crowning glory’.

Mr Waters said: ‘It is looking great, the whole refurbishment has made us an even more attractive hotel in the Portsmouth market.’

He said that work was progressing, despite big changes at Marriott as it merged with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide on Friday in a £9.5bn deal.

Mr Waters said: ‘We are now one company – the biggest hotel chain in the world.

‘There will be some changes, and what they will look like we don’t know yet. But the two companies will come together, which is great for our customers and staff. It is really good news.’

The total number of hotels owned by the company is now 5,700, with more than 1.1m rooms across 30 brands in 110 countries.

Mr Waters added he was looking forward to the upcoming JP South Business Awards, run by The News’ parent company Johnston Press, due to take place on Friday in Brighton.

The hotel is up for two accolades, after it won the Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism category and the Best Team category at the Business Excellence Awards, organised by The News, at the Portsmouth Guildhall in February.

‘It’s going to be a great night,’ Mr Waters said.

Marriott Hotel Portsmouth has won awards for being the best Marriott in Europe within the hotel brand.
