Copnor Takeaway gets new hygiene rating two months after mouse infestation

New rating given to takeaway previously described as ‘unsafe and unhygienic’

A takeaway that was closed in July due to a mouse infestation has received a new food hygiene rating.

Copnor Takeaway at 147 Copnor Road was visited by food hygiene inspectors on August 26, just over a month after it had been forced to close after a routine inspection found the eatery “unsafe and unhygienic”. The latest visit ended with better news for the takeaway with it being issued with a rating of three which is ‘generally satisfactory’.

Inspectors judge food establishments in three areas; hygienic food handling; cleanliness and condition of facilities and building; and management of food safety. The August inspection saw Copnor Takeaway’s management of food safety as ‘good’ while its hygienic food handling and cleanliness as ‘generally satisfactory’.

The score of three is an improvement after a visit on July 20 found that the storeroom at the back of the kitchen had issues with mice. Droppings were found next to open food in boxes of onions, and on food storage shelves next to tins and sacks of rice. It was subsequently issued a signed Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order preventing it from reopening.

Having addressed the issue, Copnor Takeaway reopened following another visit by inspectors before the end of July.
