Students thrive at this school

Every child’s individuality is celebrated and nurtured at an infant school which has received a glowing outcome following its latest inspection.

Crofton Hammond Infant School, in Mancroft Avenue, Stubbington, has been commended for attendance and behaviour, inclusion and personal development, all of which are a strong standard.

This comes following an inspection which took place on June 23 of this year, and was published in October.

The report highlighted that there is an “unwavering focus on ensuring that pupils are in school every day” and “unequivocal” communications from the start stress to parents the importance of pupils attending school.

It continued: “As a result, attendance overall and for key groups is consistently higher than the national average. Very few pupils regularly miss school.

“Pupils behave very well at work and play without the need for reminders. Deliberate nurturing of their ‘curiosity, respect and resilience’ underpins their positive attitudes to learning. Pupils live up to the expectation to ‘be safe, be ready and be kind’.”

The inspection also noted how the school excels in inclusion and leaders’ firmly held belief that ‘every child deserves to have their needs met’ permeates all aspects of the school’s work.

The school has a “deep understanding” of their outside community and they are aware of the challenges service families in the area may face. Highly effective social and emotional support is in place for students.

The inspection added: “Leaders are committed to being ‘a happy, caring and inclusive school where each child’s individuality is celebrated and valued and… they will learn to thrive in an ever-changing world’.

“Staff make sensitive adaptations to the personal development programme to ensure that all pupils can benefit at a level matched to their understanding. Leaders take great care to track pupils' personal development.”

Students are able to enjoy a broad and carefully constructed curriculum, with leadership recently overseeing a review of English and maths. Teachers check what knowledge has been retained often and there is a “sharp focus” on ensuring the foundations of learning are created properly.

Adaptions are also put in place for children who face additional challenges and barriers.

In order to maintain its high quality of teaching, the inspection said leaders should “ensure that high-quality teaching is embedded throughout the school so that pupils consistently achieve well across the curriculum.”
