Massive police response as officer injured and man incapacitated in Portsmouth

A massive police response is dealing with an incident in Fratton after an officer was injured.

A video on social media shows an officer writhing in agony on the ground “screaming” just feet from a man detained on the ground at the back of Farm Foods, close to Clifton Street, around 1.30pm.

The footage appears to show the man on the floor being incapacitated with Pava spray before another officer gently kicks him and places handcuffs on his back.

Several officers can then be seen rushing over to attend to their colleague who appears unable to stand up, with him seen clutching his leg. Around 30 officers attended the incident.

An eyewitness said on the social media video: “I heard (the officer) screaming. (The suspect) has obviously done something to his face. He’s hurt that police (officer).”

A post from the witness also said: “(I) heard screaming, I think the policeman (has) been stabbed, maybe in the leg. They’re dressing the leg.”

Another resident said on the video: “(The officer’s) shot him (with Pava spray).”

A white van was reportedly seized at the scene.

Police have now given details, with a spokesperson saying: “At around 1.30pm, police made attempts to stop a man behind Farm Foods in Fratton.

“An officer was then reportedly assaulted, and suffered an ankle injury requiring hospital treatment.

“Police arrested the 45-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in custody at this time.”
