A murderer ‘manipulated and exploited’ young boys he raped and took advantage of, a prosecutor has told a jury.

The 66-year-old Royal Navy veteran is now on trial at Winchester Crown Court accused of the rape of a teenager and indecent assault charges against three other male complainants, including a 14-year-old boy, dating between February 1994 and November 1999. Grimson denies the charges.

In court this morning (Thursday, July 23), the jury heard from prosecutor John Price KC, who summarised his argument of Grimson’s guilt.

He said: “This case boils down to a simple question - from those who have given an account of matters, who was trying to tell the truth? Alternatively, who was trying to obscure or conceal it?

“[He was] a superior officer, and somebody twice the age of one complainant. These indictments are, in fact, broadly similar. You may agree that they reveal deception by the older man, manipulating, exploiting and abusing his power.

“By 2024, Grimson was trying to portray it as no more than a successful seduction of a willing partner. Grimson constructed an account all those years later - please don’t forget that.”

When Grimson was arrested on suspicion of murder in December 1999, he not only admitted to both killings, but told police about the photographs he had taken of complainants in this case. He later told officers that there was “some confusion” in his mind, having just confessed to the two murders.

Mr Price added: “He made a number of significant submissions, all of which he has since gone back on. In 1999, what Grimson said was the truth, but not the whole truth. He called the indecent photographs of a child ‘art’, and he called it a means of administering ‘discipline’.

“He now says he might not have been himself when he was first interviewed in 1999. But by Dr Fellows, he was recorded as being entirely well, and Grimson told him he had no symptoms of depression. He was deemed fit to be detained and interviewed. Not long after that, he makes two true concessions of murder.”

One the defence, led by solicitor John Femi-Ola, has concluded their arguments, the judge will summarise the case, and the jury will be retired to reach a verdict.
