‘I saw flashing lights from outside my window and came out to see what was going on.’

Police arrived at about 7.30pm today, with roughly half a dozen police vehicles on the scene.

The road is closed to cars in both directions, and pedestrians are being directed through Yorke Street.

A biker who was passing through, and lives nearby, said: ‘It’s sad but it doesn’t surprise me that something like this has happened.

‘We get crime all the time around here – the block I live in has been broken into six times in the past month.

‘It looks like somebody could have been seriously hurt and if that’s the case then I just hope they recover.’

Another resident said: ‘I was looking out of my window and could see more and more police arriving.
