Firefighters in tough walking challenge from Horndean to Portsmouth

DOZENS of people are expected to join six firefighters as they carry a 35ft ladder 13 miles for charity.

Firefighter Craig Sadler has organised the event to raise money for two charities close to his heart, Football For Cancer and The Fire Fighters Charity.

He did a similar walk last year carrying a stretcher.

Mr Sadler, 43, said: ‘It was really tough-going but we raised quite a bit of
money, £9,000, so it was well worth it.

‘This year there will be six firefighters in full kit and breathing apparatus.

‘But that’s just the start. I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed with the support I’ve received from everyone. It’s really humbling.

‘So many people wanted to do it with me – firefighters, friends and family, local businesses.

‘There could be anything between 30 and 40 people walking along with us.’

The walk starts at Horndean fire station, in Blendworth Lane, at 10am on Saturday.

It will take around six hours for the group to reach Gunwharf Quays.

Donations can be given direct to firefighters along the way.
