More autistic people deserve jobs says Portsmouth MP

PORTSMOUTH South MP Flick Drummond is urging employers to offer more autistic people the chance to work.

The call comes after the National Autistic Society found only 16 per cent of autistic adults were in full-time jobs.

The Autism Employment Gap report found 34 per cent of employers thought that someone with neuro-diversity would be unable to fit into their team.

Mrs Drummond said: ‘The report makes it clear more education and awareness is badly needed across the board to help people with autism to get into jobs.

‘Of course not everyone on the spectrum is able to have a job, but many thousands are, so some of the myths about people with the condition not being “team players” or “difficult” need to be confronted to end this unfair employment gap. I would hope employers reading this might think there are positives from employing people with neuro-diversity that could benefit their business because there is much help available to get the right approach in place.’
