A trade union and anti-racism group have arranged a peaceful unity rally this weekend in response to the anti-immigration protests that have taken place across the UK.

Portsmouth Trade Union Council and Portsmouth Stand Up To Racism have called for a unity rally in Guildhall Square at 1pm on Saturday, August 10. The organisers are asking for faith groups and campaign organisers to speak at the event and demonstrate the majority of people in the city are against racism, hatred and violence.

Anti-immigration protests have been held across the UK following the tragic events in Southport where three young children were killed by a lone knifeman. Misinformation across social media regarding the incident raised anger levels as far right protesters carried out riots, looting, and attacked Mosques and hotels where asylum seekers were being held.

Protesters attended Portsmouth Guildhall last Saturday, with the event remaining largely peaceful. However, counter protestors from Stand Up To Racism told The News that they were verbally abused and threatened on the day. A further protest took place last night (Wednesday) outside the UK Border Agency building in Kettering Terrace with a small number of right wing protesters blocking the M275.

Jon Woods, chair of Portsmouth Trade Council, is arranging the unity rally to showcase that the majority of Portsmouth residents do not share the views that have been on display.

He said: “We need to show there are many, many more of us than the racists. Far right fascists do not represent our city. We need to stand united for diversity and for inclusion.

“We will not sit back and allow sections of our community to be targeted and threatened. I urge as many people as possible to join us on Saturday and to bring their friends, family and work colleagues. Our strength lies in our numbers, peacefully asserting our unity. One City, One People.”
