Southsea aquarium welcomes baby spider crabs
THOUSANDS of spiny spider crabs have been born at the Blue Reef Aquarium.
The Southsea attraction has welcomed the tiny crabs, which are smaller than a 50p coin. It is unusual for crabs in captivity to breed and it is only the second time the aquarium has seen them hatch.
Martyn Chandler said: ‘The crabs begin life as minuscule, free-swimming larvae and this is the most risky stage.
‘They are so small it is difficult to get them to feed and they are also vulnerable to predators and other spider crabs.’
