Birmingham delighted Horndean clinch derby win over BaffinsÂ

Horndean took the local Wessex League premier division bragging rights following their 2-0 defeat of Baffins Milton Rovers at Five Heads Park.

First-half goals from Alfie Lis and Conor Duffin won the clash for the Deans.

Michael Birmingham was delighted with the application displayed by Horndean, who moved into second in the table.

'˜It was a very tough three points against a good side,' said the Five Heads Park boss.

'˜We started off well and got ahead early on.

'˜Baffins then passed the ball around like we know they can and had a lot of possession.

'˜They missed a great chance to level and our goalkeeper, Kieran McGhee, pulled off the save of the season.

'˜We unlocked their offside trap for a second time before the interval.

'˜After the break, we were excellent out of possession and they didn't ask enough questions of us.'

Meanwhile, AFC Portchester were knocked off the top of the division by Sholing, who beat the Royals 2-1 at the Universal Stadium.

Joint-manger Mick Catlin felt his troops were unlucky to return to the Crest Finance Stadium empty-handed. 

He said: '˜It was a good game, we played well and were a bit unlucky not to get anything from it.

'˜They had the first half and we had the second.'

After falling two goals behind, Steve Ramsey hit back with a 25-yard screamer on 75 minutes but it proved in vain. 

Pete Stiles got the reaction he demanded from Fareham Town after their humiliating 9-0 Wessex League Cup loss against Cowes Sports in midweek. 

The Reds bounced back with a 1-0 victory against Hamble Club at Cams Alders.

'˜I was looking for a reaction and the lads certainly gave one,' said manager Stiles.

'˜It wasn't pretty and one goal was probably going to win it, but we were solid for most of the game rarely giving them a decent look at goal.'

The match-winner arrived in the 73rd minute when Nathan Paxton notched his first goal for the club.

He found space in the box before nestling a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

In division one, goals from Lewis Beale and Harry Potter secured United Services a 2-0 win at Newport.

A second-half Will Essai effort earned Petersfield Town a 1-1 draw at Follands Sports.
