Friends reunited can help striker be Pompey's Main man

And the new attacking arrival has told how he believes quickly bedding in at his new home can help him fire the Blues to success.

Main could be in line for his first pre-season minutes since arriving from Doncaster at the Hawks tomorrow night.

The 24-year-old has been easing his way back from a groin issue since Paul Cook landed him on a two-year deal.

The striker will be expected to provide the goal threat needed to turn Pompey into the real deal in League Two next term.

And he believes having familiar faces around will help him to ensure his attacking qualities shine.

‘I see myself as a powerful player. Quick, strong and very direct,’ said Main.

‘I like to get the ball and get it down. Pass, move and be attack-minded. I want to get in on goal and get shots off.

‘It’s been enjoyable to get to know the boys.

‘It’s exciting. It’s a new challenge with objectives and ambitions.

‘From what I’ve seen of young Conor Chaplin, I think he’s an intriguing player.

‘And the majority of fans wouldn’t know, but I’ve actually played with Michael Smith.

‘We did our apprenticeship together at Darlington, so we know each other very well on and off the pitch.

‘We know each others’ games and there’s that common ground.

‘I know what Michael can do, he knows what I can do and we can work off each other as we have in the past.

‘It’s good and exciting. I’m looking forward to it.

‘Coming here I know quite a few people. It wasn’t like I didn’t know anyone.

‘I’ve played with Enda Stevens and Kyle Bennett.

‘I’ve played with Christian Burgess as well and I know a lot of the squad. I have experience of playing alongside them.

‘It helps having that. It’s been quite nice.’

Main is out to settle into his new surroundings, with his fiancée expecting their first child later this year.

But the South Shields-born man can already see a lot of similarities to where he grew up in the north east.

Main said: ‘It’s a change. A whole lifestyle change.

‘But coming down to the south coast and Southsea kind of reminds me of home.

‘It’s very similar with the seafront to where I grew up.

‘I like the area up by Canoe Lake. It feels like home already. It doesn’t feel alien to where I’m from.

‘I’m a Newcastle fan and the fans here remind me of where I’m from. The season-ticket sales are amazing.

‘I’m really looking forward to the future here, on and off the pitch.

‘I want to get settled as soon as possible. I’ve got a fiancée moving down and we’re expecting.

‘We’re both eagerly anticipating what’s to come. It’s exciting times and all go.’
