It’s the news the Fratton faithful were fearing.

Of course, it’s official confirmation of former Pompey favourite, Ben Thompson’s, move to League One counterparts, Gillingham.

And after weeks of speculation about a potential homecoming for the 26-year-old, it’s time to move on.

Blues fans were licking their lips at a potential reunion with the player who impressed so much during a short-term loan spell in 2018.

Indeed, supporters created their own Twitter storm last week when news broke of the 26-year-old’s availability this winter.

And figures at the club, including Danny Cowley, were inundated with messages to sign the midfielder – to the point where the Blues chief had to log out of his account.

Thus opening the way for the Gills to swoop, after finally replacing Steve Evans after he departed the club earlier this January.

And Thompson’s move to Kent sees him linkup with former Lion’s boss Neil Harris – who took the reins at Priestfields today.

The former Cardiff manager cast his eye over the versatile midfielder between 2015-2020 at the Den.

And Harris will be hoping the 26-year-old will rediscover his form in royal blue, if he’s to keep Gillingham in League One by the season’s end.
