Indeed, supporters created their own Twitter storm last week when news broke of the 26-year-old’s availability this winter.
So much so, Thompson’s name became a top 20 trend across the country due to the huge numbers of tweets regarding the ex-Pompey man.
And figures at the club, including Danny Cowley, were inundated with messages to sign the midfielder – to the point where the Blues chief had to log out of his account.

Hide AdHowever, as reported by The News shortly after, Pompey were reluctant to make a move for him, with conversations going no further than gauging opinion on a potential transfer.
Thus opening the way for the Gills to swoop, after finally replacing Steve Evans after he departed the club earlier this January.
And Thompson’s move to Kent sees him linkup with former Lion’s boss Neil Harris – who took the reins at Priestfields today.
The former Cardiff manager cast his eye over the versatile midfielder between 2015-2020 at the Den.
