But the American insisted it was a position the Blues should never have been in as he deemed the Pilgrims encounter as one that should have provided a maximum return.

The Blues were determined to build on their midweek win at Charlton – and put to bed any lingering doubts about their home form after defeats to the Imps and Hull in their past two games at Fratton Park.

However, they were denied that chance, with the hosts unable to capitalise on their first-half superiority and then made to pay the price when Luke Jephcott scored twice as the second half progressed.

A third home defeat in a row looked a certainty for Kenny Jackett’s side.

That is, of course, until substitute Ronan Curtis and forgotten man James Bolton rescued an unexpected point.

Eisner congratulated the character shown by Pompey as they stared defeat in the face.

Yet he made it clear that three points was the primary objective before kick-off.

Tweeting after the final whistle, the Blues co-owner said: ‘Great determination at the end to pull it together, but a match we should have received 3 points from.’

Pompey will be hoping to rectify their recent home struggles when they host Swindon at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.
